Celebrating Byzantine Heritage: Bishop Joachim’s Presentations and Iconographic Tour at the 50th Annual Byzantine Studies Conference
From 25-27 October, His Grace Bishop Joachim of Amissos, PhD, participated in the 50th Annual Byzantine Studies Conference which was held in New York City at the Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus, Columbia University, and The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). Bishop Joachim offered two presentations. He was one of four scholars who participated in the session devoted to the memory of the prominent and internationally known Prof. Anthony Cutler, who passed away in May of 2024. Prof. Cutler was the professor of Byzantine Art History at The Pennsylvania State University for 51 years and it was under his direction that Bishop Joachim received his Master’s and PhD in Byzantine Art History.
The following day, at the Saint Nicholas Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center, Ground Zero, His Grace offered for the Byzantine scholars a tour and overview of the Shrine’s iconographic program. Bishop Joachim is the iconographic consultant for the Saint Nicholas Shrine and he created the iconographic program that was then painted by the celebrated and most gifted iconographer, Fr. Loukas of the Xenophontos Monastery of Mount Athos.
